In Finder, open window showing demo files in large icon view
Launch Tailor
Open & position tool box, graphic inspector and color mixer
Set color mixer in color wheel mode
In this demo we will graphically enhance a page that was composed using a DTP program and exported to a PostScript file. We need to do the following:
- Make some last minute text corrections
- Artistically enhance a spreadsheet graph and integrate it into the page
- Match the styles of the elements on the page to get a finished appearance.
The demo will show how to accomplish this wide variety of tasks without having access to the originating applications, just by using a single PostScript editing program, Tailor.
Open the file 'HexiumText.ps' in Tailor
Enlarge the window until it fills most of the screen portion not covered by the floating panels
The demo page was composed in Quark XPress. It could as well have been composed in Pagemaker or a word processing program. For Tailor, it wouldn't make any difference!
Tailor is a great PostScript viewer. You can quickly zoom and pan, and you can choose between preview and wireframe viewing modes. Every window has its own toolbar.
Show sliders & scroll control, viewport on the logo (200%), and back to 100%
Go to page 2 and back
Show wireframe view, turn back to preview
Tailor's graphic inspector is a very powerful tool. It even lets you view information about the creator of the PS file.
Open the graphic inspector, if necessary.
Exit the top level group
Re-enter the group
Using the selection tool you can select any object on the page. The graphic inspector displays the attributes of the currently selected object.
Choose selection tool
Select a few text lines and the green path on the page
The IC logo is an imported EPS file. We now select it. Note the larger selection handles indicating that this object is a group. The graphic inspector indicates which program the logo was made in!
We can open the group by simply double clicking. Watch the group level display. We can now select any element in the group. Note that we can do this without breaking the group. Most applications won't let you do this.
Zoom to 150%
Select the IC logo and double click to open
Select elements of the logo
We can edit objects in many ways. For instance, we can move them, resize them or change their color.
Move & resize the red dot in the logo, leave it at odd position.
Use the color mixer to change the color of the dot (apply or drag the color)
Let's restore the dot using Tailor's multilevel undo.
Undo repeatedly to restore the dot
Exit the IC logo group
We'll now highlight the word Hexium in the text
Scroll to and select the first 'Hexium' in the body text
Change the color of the word, and leave it in red color similar to headline
In the text, a typo has to be corrected.
Scroll further down in the text.
Select & double click the line beginning with the word 'appeard', correct the word
Nudge the word 'Hexium" at the end of the line slightly to the right
More extensive changes cannot be done on isolated lines. Unfortunately, that's the way in which text is represented in PostScript. Even single text lines may be broken up if there are style changes.
Select the word Hexium and the other parts of the line
We will now turn our attention to the Excel graph to be integrated into the page.
Open the file HexiumGraph.ps in Tailor
Zoom in on the graph (200%)
Choose selection tool
Let's delete the gray base and the tick marks, and do some fancy stuff with the text. We put the text in front of the bars.
Select all objects forming the base using constrained rectangle select, and delete them
Select each caption in turn, position on top of bars. Do not click too fast!
Even rotated text can be edited!
Double click 'Hexium', replace letter x by letter l, press return to end editing
Undo the change.
We will now place the chart on our page
Select all objects in the chart, group them, and copy the group on the pasteboard
Bring the 'HexiumText' document window to the front
Zoom Hexium page to 100% and scroll to the top
Paste into Hexium page
Place chart near top right, base below the rule, 2nd bar top higher than rule
Enlarge slightly by dragging upper left corner
We can still edit our chart after pasting it. Let's open the group. Note how all elements outside the group are dimmed to show you the exact contents of the group. You can no longer select dimmed elements by accident.
Double click chart group, click on some elements outside and inside the group
Viewport on chart
Change the color of the left & middle bar to yellow (all three visible sides)
Change color of text 'Hexium' to white
The chart is now on top of the original page elements, including the green rule. We want to add some perspective by moving the yellow bars to the back, behind the rule, and the red one to the front, in front of the rule. Note that this would be impossible to do with a monolithic uneditable EPS file. Only Tailor allows you to do this!
Exit from the chart group, ungroup the chart
Rectangle select the top of the middle bar & send it to the back
Lower the word 'Penta' from underneath the ruler
Finally, let's do some path editing to get the perspective right. Note that this is different from scaling!
Rectangle select bottom of Hexium bar, double click to begin path editing
Rectangle select bottom nodes of Hexium bar
Press 'Option' to constrain vertically, and move the nodes to lengthen the bar about 20%
Click well outside of the chart to end node editing, and deselect all
Now let's match some of those different colors.
Zoom to 100%
Select "Overview" headline, drag red color from attributes inspector to color mixer
Select the green line, drag red color back from color mixer to attributes inspector
To conclude, let's summarize the unique features of Tailor:
Indicate relevant parts of the job or menu or toolbar while talking
- You can import any PS or EPS file from any application and any platform
- Full viewing and full visual editing
- A graphic inspector that offers interactive modifications
- The capability to select and edit within a group without breaking it
